Filinvest power plant now synchronized to the grid

July 14, 2016

FDC Misamis Power Corp.’s  (FDC Misamis) coal-power plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, the biggest power plant in Mindanao, was successfully synchronized with the Mindanao grid.

The commercial operation of FDC’s first unit of its 405-megawatt (MW) coal-power project is expected after the completion of reliability tests in the coming weeks, said Juan Eugenio L. Roxas, FDC Misamis head.

“We know how critical the project is to help bring much-needed power to the Mindanao grid. We deeply appreciate the commitment and dedication of our FDC team, as well as our contractors, to meet our assurance to deliver power to our customers at the soonest time possible,” he said.

Located in the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, the power plant is a multibillion-peso investment that uses the latest in clean-coal technology: The circulating fluidized bed boiler technology.  Considered as the cleanest process to burning coal, the technology is also known for having higher steam-generator efficiency, thus lowering carbon emissions.

“This is in line with the Duterte administration’s thrust to promote regional growth, most especially in Mindanao,” FDC Misamis Vice Chairman Andrew T. Gotianun Jr. said.

FDC Misamis is a subsidiary of FDC Utilities Inc. (FDCUI) and a member of the Gotianun-led Filinvest Development Corp.

Contractual commitments have been secured for more than 80 percent of the project’s net capacity with various distribution utilities and large industrial customers in Mindanao.

“This will help ensure the supply of reliable and competitively priced power for the province and the rest of the region,” Roxas said.

Mario R. Pangilinan, FDCUI president and COO, said the power plant is expected to help secure investment potentials in the Mindanao area.

“Mindanao needs to grow like the rest of the country like Luzon and the Visayas. And one of the things needed for the growth is attraction of investors through more power facilities.”
